Professor Evangelos D. Protopapadakis (2015-)

Evangelos D. Protopapadakis succeeded Theodosios Pelegrinis as the Director of the Laboratory and renamed it the Applied Philosophy Research Laboratory in 2017. He is Professor of Applied Ethics and Bioethics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens; Member of the Hellenic National Commission for Bioethics and Technoethics; Head of the Greek Unit of the International Chair in Bioethics (WMA Cooperation Center), Director of the MA Program Animal Welfare, Ethics and the Law, Member of the Pan-Orthodox Committee of Bioethics of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople, Member of the Greek National Authority of Assisted Reproduction, and Member of the Bioethics Committee of the Hellenic Pasteur Institute. He has published 4 monographs in Greek and 2 in English as the single author, as well as 12 edited volumes as the editor or the co-editor: 5 in English, 1 in Serbian and 6 in Greek. He has published more than 70 papers in domestic or international scientific journals and volumes. He is a member of several domestic and international philosophical societies; he is also the Editor-in-Chief of Conatus – Journal of Philosophy.

Professor Emeritus Theodosios N. Pelegrinis, Immediate-past Director (2010-2015)

Theodosios N. Pelegrinis (born 1948) succeeded Konsantinos Boudouris as the Director of the Philosophical and Technological Laboratory of Applied and Ecological Philosophy in 2010. He is Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. A graduate of NKUA, he pursued postgraduate studies at the University of Exeter, where he earned his PhD in Philosophy. He has taught philosophy at NKUA since 1977 and has held several major academic leadership positions, including Dean of the School of Philosophy (2001–2007), Chair of the Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology (2007–2011), and Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (2010–2014). He also served as Deputy Minister of Education, Research and Religious Affairs of Greece. Professor Pelegrinis is the author of more than twenty-five books and numerous scholarly articles spanning the history of philosophy, ethics, aesthetics, and philosophy of culture. In 2007, he received the Greek State Essay Award for his book From Civilization to Hunger. Beyond his academic work, he has written literary works and plays, several of which have been staged in Greece and abroad, and has contributed extensively to public intellectual life through television and radio programmes on philosophy and culture.


Professor Konstantinos Boudouris, Founding Director (1999-2010)

Konstantinos Boudouris (1935-2023) established the Laboratory initially as the Philosophical and Technological Laboratory of Applied and Ecological Philosophy. He was Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. An internationally recognised scholar of ancient Greek philosophy and the history of philosophy, he has made significant contributions to the study and promotion of Hellenic philosophical thought. He has served repeatedly as President, Vice President, and Secretary General of the Hellenic Philosophical Society and President of the International Society for Greek Philosophy. He has also been a member of the Steering Committee of the International Federation of Philosophical Societies (FISP) and Editor-in-Chief of the Hellenic Philosophical Review. Professor Boudouris has authored and edited numerous books and scholarly articles covering ancient Greek philosophy as well as broader areas of philosophical inquiry. Throughout his distinguished academic career, he has organised more than fifty national and international philosophical conferences and seminars, fostering dialogue among scholars worldwide and contributing substantially to the international visibility of Greek philosophical scholarship.
