DESPINA VERTZAGIA

Immediate-past Managing Editor, Conatus - Journal of Philosophy

Despina Vertzagia holds a Ph.D. in Political Philosophy from Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences, an M.A. in Philosophy (History of Philosophy), and a B.A. in Philosophy from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. Her doctoral research examined Leo Strauss’s critique of modern political thought, the relationship between theory and praxis, and the Socratic treatment of liberalism. She is currently a Senior Researcher at the Research Center for Biopolitics, Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences, and at the Applied Philosophy Research Laboratory of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She also serves as Production Manager of the NKUA Applied Philosophy Research Lab Press. From 2016 to 2026, she was Managing Editor of Conatus – Journal of Philosophy, where she coordinated the journal’s editorial and peer-review processes and contributed to its international academic development. She has taught as an Adjunct Lecturer at Panteion University and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. She has been awarded a Pre-doctoral Fellowship at the Harvard Center for Hellenic Studies, the Robert L. Platzman Memorial Fellowship at the University of Chicago Library, and two Sylff Research Grants. She is the author of the monograph The City and the Philosopher: Leo Strauss Revisits Plato (Papazissi, 2022) and has published articles, book chapters, translations, interviews, and book reviews on political philosophy, ancient philosophy, and the history of philosophy.
