The Greek Unit of the International Chair in Bioethics was established in 2015 at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, within the Applied Philosophy Research Laboratory. Its establishment resulted from a mutual agreement between the then UNESCO Chair in Bioethics (Haifa), Professor Amnon Carmi, and the then Rector of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Professor Meletios-Athanasios Dimopoulos, following an initiative by Professor Evangelos D. Protopapadakis, Director of the Laboratory. The Unit was originally founded as the Greek Unit of the UNESCO Chair in Bioethics.
In June 2021, the agreement between UNESCO and the Chair expired, and the Chair was subsequently reconstituted as an independent international organization under the name International Chair in Bioethics based at the University of Haifa, and soon after at the University of Porto. It was promptly recognized by leading international organizations and soon entered into a cooperation agreement with the World Medical Association (WMA), along with several other prominent international bodies.
The Greek Unit of the International Chair in Bioethics is the only academic institution to represent the Chair in Greece, and the only one that is officially authorized by the former UNESCO Chair in Bioethics (Haifa) - now the International Chair in Bioethics (WMA Cooperating Center) - to organize the national celebrations of World Bioethics Day.
